Guru3D: Hey everyone .. Cooler Master Musketeer 3 is a sound quality controller that filters the accurate digital signal of sound to a much more harmonic output in a classical way - Vacuum Tube Technology. With its dial VU meter and cascade volume control at the front panel, Cooler Master Musketeer 3 brings you back to 60's as well as the ancient-restored vacuum light warming your heart. Did somebody at CoolerMaster have loose his mind ? I mean, there's a reason that vacuum tubes were left in history back in the 50's: they kinda suck. However, they might have lost their minds, but they ain't crazy. Tubes have been making a bit of a renaissance comeback lately in audio. Amplifiers using tubes have always been apart of studios, and really, you can't have a rock 'n roll band without some screaming tube amps for the guitars. I would venture to say that every song you hear will have a tube somewhere in audio chain. You see, tubes are really inefficient for audio, requiring lots of voltage, and make a lot of heat. Heat, as we can all testify, is the enemy. Transistors eclipsed them years ago on cost and low distortion. Speaking of distortion, what you may not know, is that when a tube clips its output it produces a softer, even-order harmonic distortion that is not as bad on the ears as odd-order harmonic distortion. This quality alone makes them desirable for audiophiles who want something more musical. "

Of Hostages & Relationships: Article by Suzanne Clothier FLYING DOG PRESS

Of Hostages & Relationships: Article by Suzanne Clothier FLYING DOG PRESS: "OF HOSTAGES & RELATIONSHIPS
by Suzanne Clothier

He said that he loved her. He said that his relationship with her mattered almost more than anything else in his life. He said that he enjoyed working with her, and sharing new ideas. To be sure, she never took her eyes off his face, paying no heed to the audience who waited breathlessly to hear his secrets for such adoration, such undivided attention.

'First', he said, 'I never let her talk to anyone but me. When I leave for work, I lock her in a room, which is pretty boring for her, but when I get home - oh, is she ever glad to see me! If she wants to do anything, except go to the bathroom, she has to do it with me. I control her food, her exercise and all her activities. Wherever we go, I insist that she always look at me, so I know for sure she's paying absolute attention. I don't let her have any friends, because they might distract her or use up the energy she needs for working. Being the only social contact she has, I am very important to her. Naturally, she'd rather be with me than anyone else.'

The audience didn't gasp. They didn't protest in any way. They didn't stand up and tell him that was archaic, outrageous treatment. They did not shout out that this was not, could not be, the secret of a healthy, happy relationship. Instead, they nodded, and took notes. They thought this made perfect sense.

Was this some sensationalistic talk show featuring, 'Taking A Hostage - Key to a Happy Relationship?' Unfortunately, it was not Geraldo or Sally. This was a dog training seminar, and 'he' was talking about 'her' - his dog. (And while I say 'he', this attitude is certainly not limited to male trainers but applies equally to female trainers.) If this had been a man talking about his wife, or a mother discussing how she raised her kids, the audience would have been, rightfully, appalled. But it was, after all, only a dog, and these were tech"

Shonen Knife - Wind Your Spring LYRICS

Shonen Knife - Wind Your Spring LYRICS: "It is time to wake up, now
Let's rush out of your room, now
If you have nothing to do, you must be bored
Getting dangerous again
Let's take out your weapon
If you do nothing at all, you'll be destroyed

Nothing's impossible
If you wind your spring
You can do anything

If you have nothing to do, you must be bored

It is time to wake up, now
The alarm clock's ringing, now
If you have nothing to do, you must be bored

There are rumors in this world
Let's get them out of this world
If you have nothing to do, you must feel tired

Nothing's impossible
If you wind your spring
You can do everything

Nothing's impossible
If you wind your spring
You can do everything "

The Dutch and their amphibious houses

we make money not art: Amphibious houses: "Amphibious houses
01:57 PM architecture

The Dutch are gearing up for climate change with amphibious houses. If rivers rise above their banks, the houses rise upwards as well.

houyel00.jpg
Drive-in from Waterstudio.

37 'swimming' houses are already strung along a branch of the Maas. At first glance, they seem quite unremarkable. The cellar, in this case, is not built into the earth, but on a platform. The hollow foundation of each house works in the same way as the hull of a ship, buoying the structure up above water. To prevent the houses from floating away, they slide up two steel posts - and as the water level sinks, so they sink back down again.

'The columns have been driven deep into solid ground,' explains Dick van Gooswilligen from the construction company. 'They are even strong enough to withstand currents you would find on the open seas. As global warming causes the sea level to rise, this is the solution.'

0,1020,522143,00.jpg

One of the leading architects in maritime architecture is Koen Olthuis. His office has designed houseboats with a parking deck for the car and lower deck storage for a motorboat. Now, his team is coming up with plans for office buildings a hundred meters in height that 'swim.' The key is a technique whereby the foundation of the construction can be transformed into a float. A foam core is encased in concrete, with steel cables securing it against the pull of potential currents. Individual pontoons can be joined to one another like Lego blocks.

'This construction model is built to last at least one hundred years,' Olthuis says. If anything should happen to the foundation, the whole thing can be taken to the dockyard.

The first town based on this model, numbering 12,000 houses, might conceivably be built close to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

Martial arts - How good are they for self defense? || kuro5hin.org: "Martial arts - How good are they for self defense? (Culture)

Culture

Like a lot of geeks, I am attracted to Martial Arts. The idea that study, practice, and resulting increase in skill will allow you to defend yourself against someone stronger is attractive. The philosophy and culture of martial arts is attractive as well. Of course, one has to wonder how useful they are for actual self defense.

I have studied a few Martial Arts over the years. I haven't earned anything over an intermediate rank in any art, so I'm no expert in any particular style. On the other hand, I don't have as much time or ego invested in any art in particular, so I feel I can be a bit more objective.

Here are some martial arts, and my take on them. Note, there are many different styles within a particular martial art. I'm talking generalities here. I'm also talking about the way these arts are practiced in the present day, in the western world, as I have no experience training in Asia.

Karate: Lots of focus on Katas (pre-arranged 'forms' of movements. Some sparring, but it's mostly low contact 'point' style sparring, with protective gear (Kyokushinkai is one of those exceptions to the generalization here, as they spar full contact - until knock down or knockout, with no protection, but with no punches to the head). Lots of time doing traditional stances, kicks, reverse punches, etc. I'm not so sure this is very effective in self defense situations, as many of the techniques are very ritualized, and unrealistic.

Tae Kwon Do: Same as Karate, except much greater focus on high kicks. Even less realistic for defense than Karate.

Japanese Ju-jitsu: Focus on stand up grappling, wrist locks, escapes from grabs and chokes, many throws and falls. Has the same ritualized formal practice as Karate - lots of practice against an un-resisting, unm"

Gastroesophageal reflux disease - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gastroesophageal reflux disease - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Avoiding aggravating factors

The rubric 'lifestyle modifications' is the term physicians use when recommending non-pharmaceutical treatments for GERD.

Certain foods and lifestyle tend to promote gastroesophageal reflux:

* Coffee, alcohol, calcium supplements, and excessive amounts of Vitamin C supplements are stimulants of gastric acid secretion so avoiding these helps. Calcium containing antacids such as TUMS (Calcium carbonate) are in this group[1]
* Foods high in fats and smoking reduce lower esophageal sphincter competence so avoiding these tends to help as well.
* Having more but smaller meals also reduces the risk of GERD as it means there is less in the stomach at any one time.

Advice generally given:

* avoid eating for 2 hours before bedtime
* elevate the head of the bed on 6 inch blocks. (Pillows under the head and shoulders have been shown to be ineffective.)
* avoid sodas that contain caffeine
* avoid chocolate and peppermint
* avoid spicy foods
* avoid acidic foods like oranges and tomatoes
* avoid cruciferous vegetables: onions, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussel sprouts
* avoid fried and fatty foods
* avoid milk and heavily milk based products

Avoiding food for 2 hours before bedtime, as well as not lying down after a meal, are the most important of the lifestyle modifications. Elevation to the head of the bed is the next easiest to implement. If pharmacologic therapy in combination with food avoidance before bedtime and elevation of the head of the bed, then the other steps are recommended."

TASCAM Forums -> Effect Sends

TASCAM Forums -> Effect Sends: "You have the vocal mic plugged into FW-1884 (let's say Channel #1)

You have an external effect unit that provides reverb, echo, whatever.

You'd like to record the vocal mic track dry but still be able to hear the
effect ( and possibly record the effect on a separate track from vocal) ???

The FW has a pre-AD converter SEND TRS/TS jack on each of the 8 channels.

Using the appropriate cable type (if effect unit has 3-connector balanced TRS , use
TRS cable, if just unbalanced TS, use TS cable) ,
connect cable between Channel #1 SEND output to the
INPUT of Effects unit.

If you are wanting to record the effects unit, connect cable between
Effects OUTPUT and the RETURN of FW Channel #1.

If you don't want to record the effects, connect to the input of FW Channel #2 -
Channel #2 will be the return from the Effects, which you can mix in with
the monitor signal, and then record it (or not) as you wish."

Chapter 5: Housing

Chapter 5: Housing: "3. My former friend is now an unwelcome, guest in my house. What can I do to make that person leave?

If the person has not been living with you for a long time then you have the right to evict them immediately. You would be well advised to seek legal advice first however, as the person may have some right of which you are not aware. You might end up having to provide them with compensation if you compromise these rights. Even if you do have a right of immediate eviction, you cannot withhold any of the person's property or damage it, even if you think they have abandoned it or you think the person owes you money.

However if you have concerns about your physical safety, or are worried that the person may damage your property, you should discuss the matter with friends, family or the local police. If you have the right to evict and the person refuses to leave, you might be able to seek the help of the police to have the person escorted from your property as a trespasser."

APOD: 2005 August 9 - The Belt of Venus over Elwood Beach

APOD: 2005 August 9 - The Belt of Venus over Elwood Beach: "The Belt of Venus over Elwood Beach

Explanation: Although you've surely seen it, you might not have noticed it. During a cloudless twilight, just before sunrise or after sunset, part of the atmosphere above the horizon appears slightly off-color, slightly pink. Called the Belt of Venus, this off-color band between the dark eclipsed sky and the blue sky can be seen in nearly every direction including that opposite the Sun. Straight above, blue sky is normal sunlight reflecting off the atmosphere. In the Belt of Venus, however, the atmosphere reflects light from the setting (or rising) Sun which appears more red. The Belt of Venus can be seen from any location with a clear horizon. Pictured above, the Belt of Venus was photographed behind Elwood Beach in Melbourne, Australia. The belt is frequently caught by accident in other photographs."

Welcome to Walter Cedric home: "Connect your Xbox to the network! Using the remote controller or gamepad, you can go in evox 'system preferences', this is the place where you can set the FTP server adress, password, DNS, gateway.

* Use a fix IP, it should be something like 192.168.0.XXX with XXX from 2 to 255, use for example 192.168.0.10
* Do not set the 2 DNS (Domain Name Server which is normally your router 192.168.0.1) if you do not want to let your XBox have an access to internet.
* You can not change te FTP login name ('xbox'Wink, only the default password ('xbox'Wink this is because the login 'xbox' is encrypted in MD5, a page on www.xboxmediacenter.com (FAQ) section let you change it in file fileserver.xml

Save all changes (save changes is located at the end of the menu), and reboot your Xbox

Attention: I use to have some instabilities with 2 different crossed Ethernet cable, in fact the FTP was instable and unusable (disconnect and time out problems), I am using a router-switch in the middle now and everything is working perfectly. This is probably due to a mass problem.

Use your favorite FTP client (LeechFTP, CuteFTP, ....) to connect to the XBOX, it is good idea to backup all files found under C: (default dashboard and RSA key pair for your machine)

If you want to play with EvolutionX: add or translate for example some new entries in the main menu, edit the file c:evox.ini"

fix for "load the soundfont file failed"

Support - KnowledgeBase: "If you still cannot load a large bank after altering the Soundfont Cache, you will need to modify your operating system's registry settings to alter the set memory limit. This can, however, alter your operating system's performance. Remember to make a copy of your system's registry settings before proceeding.

Do not alter your operating system's registry settings unless you need to load a large bank.

1. Using Windows Explorer, search and locate the Windows folder.
2. Double-click the regedit.exe file. The Registry Editor window appears.
3. On the left panel, search and locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\ folder.
4. On the right panel, double-click the PagedPoolSize file. The Edit DWORD Value dialog box appears.
5. In the Value data: box, type 0xFFFFFFFF, and then click the OK button.
6. Restart your computer.
7. Launch Creative SoundFont Bank Manager, and reload the necessary SoundFont banks."

How to load SoundFont Banks in both Synth A and Synth B in Cakewalk Sonar

Support - KnowledgeBase: "How to load SoundFont Banks in both Synth A and Synth B in Cakewalk Sonar

The Sound Blaster Live!, Sound Blaster Audigy, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS cards have two hardware based MIDI Synth: Synth A and Synth B, each with 16 MIDI channels. To utilize all 32 MIDI channels, it is necessary to load SoundFont banks, either same or different SoundFont files for both of them.

To load SoundFont Banks with a Sound Blaster Live, Sound Blaster Live! 5.1, or Sound Blaster Audigy card, go to AudioHQ in Control Panel, then click on SoundFont. Click on the Options tab, and select SB Audigy Synth A (or similar), then click the Configure Bank tab and load each of the desired SoundFont files. Repeat the procedure for SB Audigy Synth B (or similar).

To load SoundFont Banks with a Sound Blaster audigy 2 card, go to Start, Programs, Creative, Sound Blaster Audigy 2, then click on SoundFont Bank Manager. Click on MIDI Device, select Synth A, then load the desired SoundFont banks; repeat the procedure for Synth B.

In addition, if you are loading different SoundFont banks in Synth A and Synth B, make sure that the Bank numbers do not overlap.

To use the SoundFont files loaded in both Synth A and Synth B under Cakewalk Sonar, open a new or existing project in Sonar, click on the Option tab, then select MIDI Devices. Under the Outputs window, make sure you have 'Synth A' and Synth B selected.

Click on the Options menu again, select Instruments. You will notice that all channels in Synth A are linked to SoundFont Device, and all channels in Synth B are linked to Default. To trick Sonar to use the SoundFont loaded in Synth B as well, select all channels in the entire window on the left (hold the shift key, then select the channels), then click on SoundFont Device on the right.
